Submissions

Guidelines
ArtsEtc accepts essays, fiction and poetry about Barbados, its Diaspora and, occasionally, the wider Caribbean community in this context. As with any publication, the best guidelines for submissions are gained from reading the publication itself.  Check out the website, our archives, or any back issues you have.  Kindly note that the opinions or views expressed are not necessarily those of ArtsEtc Inc. or its editors.

ArtsEtc is not an event review-based publication. But we do accept work that uses current shows and events in the exploration of larger and more timeless themes. We welcome:

Prose
Fiction: Short stories and excerpts (up to 3500 words).
Non-fiction: Essays (750-1,500 words) on topics concerning the arts, culture and the wider community; book reviews; letters to the editor and spot commentaries (300 words) on issues affecting the arts, culture and the wider community.

Poetry
Main Poetry Gallery: Submit 3 to 5 samples of your best work.
Haiku Gallery & Featured Haiku: Submit 3 to 5 examples of your best traditional or modern haiku, haiga or haiku-inspired verse. Photographers are invited to submit images (jpeg files up to 5MB) to be used with haiku; writers are invited to submit work inspired by images.

Illustrations
We invite photographers, graphic artists and visual artists to submit images of their work. Please send as jpeg files up to 5MB.

Terms
Payment varies depending on the type of work, its length, or its use, but generally ranges from BDS$35 for poetry to BDS$50 for prose, a photograph or an image, and may be more for original artwork.  Payment covers ArtsEtc's: right to post/publish the work online in English first; first right of refusal to reproduce the work in English in print, either in serial/periodical or book anthology form (we still dabble in paper), or digitally as part of an ebook anthology; non-exclusive right to archive the work in English on our website, with full accreditation, of course. Copyright in the work remains the contributor's.

The first right of refusal above simply means contributors grant ArtsEtc the opportunity to publish the work in print first if someone should see it and request to reproduce it in that medium. If we have no intention to print before the magazine, etc. offering to do so, or if our price for the rights to print is not competitive, then contributors are free to go with that magazine, etc. first.
